Thomas and Beulah (West) Walker of Strunk celebrated 54 years of marriage July 26th.
Beulah tells of meeting and marrying Thomas 54 years ago. Tommy and I both lived in Cincinnati, I was introduced to him by my friend and school mate, Lois Walker.
Although my parents lived in Ohio for a time they maintained a home in McCreary Co. I wanted to be married at the old home place.
Back then you had to have a blood test before you could get married. My Mommy, sister Wilma, her husband J.B. King, son Johnny, Tommy and I went to Jellico Hospital so we could get the results and be married the same day.
We only had the week-end in Kentucky before returning back to Cincinnati. My cousin Rev. Elmon King was to marry us at my parents house when we returned home.
With the test results in hand we just happened to mention our plans for the day. We were then informed we could not get our blood test in one state and be married in another. WHAT TO DO! We knew our only options were to get married in Jellico or go back to Cincinnati and wait. WAIT! no way! I had caught the handsomest man in Cincinnati and there was no way I was letting him get away. Ha Ha .
We asked where we could find a Justice of the Peace. His name was Edgar H. Douglas. He owned a garage and was at work that day. We went to where he was and told him of our problem. He could marry us in his office he said.
My Mommy and sister Wilma were our witnesses. J.B and Johnny pulled the car up to a window as to be a part. We were married in an office at a garage. When we returned to some waiting family we were already married. I don't remember what I was wearing when I got married but it sure wasn't my new suit and new hat my mommy had bought me to get married in. I have often told "we were married in a garage" and we were.
Tommy had a son "Tom" by his first wife. Together we had 6 children, Tina, Regina, Becky, Butch, Sherry, and Robin. We now have 12 grandchildren, & 9 great grand children.
Tommy (a Kentucky coal miner) and I have lived on Round Top for the last 40 years. After 45 years together he asked me to marry him again, we renewed our vows before Rev. Leonard Luckadoo, our children, other family and guests.
We have had the better and worse, we have had sickness and health, and after 54 years I still don't obey, but that was never needed from my point of view. Ha Ha Love comes from not saying "I do" but from sharing a life together and knowing you couldn't imagine "one second of life without each other.". Forgiving in those times when you can't imagine "one more second together"
We both agree it will take death to part us.
