To the Editor:
We started Champions for a Drug Free McCreary County in 2002. Our objective was to educate our youth on the dangers of the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, also to protect them from outside the school dangers. In 2005, School Superintendent Ray Ball hired the first School Resource Officer (SRO) with Champions paying part of his salary. The next year he hired a second SRO and Champions paid part of both their salaries with grants from KyASAP. The next year he was able to budget for both SROs and later the school system hired two more SROs. So we had an armed SRO in the high school, the middle school/academy, Whitley Elementary, and Pine Knot Intermediate/Primary schools. Last year with budget cuts, the school system had to release two of the SROs, that left us with only two SROs to cover five schools 3-5 miles apart.
I truly believe that if the Sandy Hook Elementary had an armed SRO in the school, that the 20 first-graders would be alive today and most likely the teachers would have survived. That 10 minutes it took the police to get there was 26 lives too late. We should all know that that could have been one of our schools.
So I DEMAND and I hope every parent, grandparent, teacher, principal, school board member, Superintendent, County Judge, magistrate, Sheriff, State Representative, State Senator and Governor demand that somewhere they find enough money to rehire the two SROs. Even if we have to raise it with private funds for the remainder of the school year, then find a budget or grant for the following year. That 10 minutes is too costly.
