Inasmuch (or because) you have done these things for one of the least of my brothers, you have done it also for me. – Matthew 25:34-40
This illustration was given by Jesus 2,000-plus years ago, but it’s just as truthful and timely today as it was then, especially in the light of global disasters that are happening every day. It is not necessary to elaborate on the details of the great tragedy in Haiti because the entire world has seen it in the media.
One thing was very notable, it was the Good Old USA that was first to respond as usual.
In spite of all the problems our country is experiencing, I’m still proud to be an American and to know that the majority of our citizens are still compassionate and ready to reach out to those who are hurting and in need.
I’m thankful for all the charitable groups, churches, family foundations and individuals who step up to the plate to be identified with Matthew 25.
I would not attempt to name all of them, I’m sure I would miss many who work behind the scene and are never recognized by the general public.
There’s one organization in McCreary County which has impacted the entire population in a very positive way. The McCreary Christian Center has been meeting the needs of hundreds of people every month for several years.
In the last fiscal year of July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009, the food pantry served 20,304 individuals and the medical clinic saw 5,481 patients – that’s a total of 25,785 who was helped by the Christian Care Center in 2008-2009. By all indications the numbers will greatly increase in the year 2010.
Again, I would not attempt to name all those who support and coordinate this program. I have recently become a part of this team under the umbrella of AmeriCorps VISTA that is supervised locally by Amy Combs.
Amy has and is working long hours daily to promote worthy causes in McCreary County.
I was very impressed with the volunteers who work long hours helping those with medical, nutritional and emotional needs on a daily basis.
Dr. Winchester and his long-time assistant, Katie Hickman, pull their shift along with pharmacist John Sandidge every Wednesday. They are always a welcome sight to those who are waiting to be seen.
Sue Singleton, the director, can be seen many times by day break until dark directing traffic. She doesn’t want to leave anyone behind who’s needing help.
The center now offers counseling for those who are experiencing problems with substance abuse, family relationships, stress and depression.
There is no charge for these services. This is another service that Amy Combs worked on for several months to obtain funding through the VISTA program.
This counseling must be arranged by appointment. Any donations will be appreciated and used to promote the entire work of Christian Care Center.
