Dear Editor:
In the January/February 2013 issue of the Highland Telephone Cooperative’s magazine the “HTC Highlander”, we were very interested in the article entitled “Broadband Allows Libraries to Offer Fast, Public Web Access”. We were pleased to see that the Huntsville and Wartburg Public Libraries offer high-speed broadband internet to their patrons in Tennessee. However, we want to inform McCreary Countians and citizens in our neighboring Tennessee counties that we also offer high-speed broadband internet here at the McCreary County Public Library.
The McCreary County Public Library was also fortunate to receive a Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant. The purpose of the grant is to assist in expanding broadband access and adoption in communities across America. The Broadband Technology Opportunities Program is administered by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Through the BTOP grant, the library is offering free computer classes to individuals. One of the goals of the BTOP grant is to help promote economic recovery and one way to meet that goal is for individuals to improve their computer skills in order to develop a resume, apply for employment, etc. We also offer online databases, such as Career Transitions and Testing and Education Reference Center. The Career Transitions database allows individuals to develop a resume, get tips on job interviews, learn how to write a cover letter, apply for jobs and more. The Testing and Education Center database makes it possible to practice for tests such as the GED.
For more information, visit or call the McCreary County Library, 6 North Main Street, Whitley City, Kentucky 42653, phone: 606-376-8738. Website: www.mccrearylibrary.org.
Sincerely,
Kay Morrow, Director
McCreary County Public Library
