A weekend marked by automotive accidents continued into Monday with the tragic death of an elderly Whitley City man yesterday afternoon.
The accident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday on US 27 just south of Bauer Road. According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Shaler Jones, William Leo Lynch of Holloway Cemetery Road was southbound in a Dodge Caravan when he crossed over the northbound lane, off onto the grass.
Trp. Jones reported that witnesses indicated that Lynch made no apparent attempt to brake as his vehicle traveled along the guardrail and continued over the embankment, coming to rest only once it struck a tree.
McCreary County Coroner Daniel Ridener pronounced Lynch, who was 94, dead at the scene. Ridener and Jones consulted with the state medical examiner, who advised that given the circumstances of the accident, Lynch’s death was most likely caused by a medical condition rather than the trauma of collision. An autopsy won’t be performed, Trp. Jones said.
Assisting at the scene were Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Officer Christopher King, North McCreary volunteer firefighters and McCreary County EMS.
Yesterday’s heavy rains caused a number of accidents across the county but the other serious accident occurred under dry conditions Saturday afternoon.
Just after 3 p.m. Kentucky State Police Trooper Craig Reed responded to a three-vehicle accident near the 13-mile marker on North US 27, two miles outside of Whitley City.
A 1998 Plymouth Neon driven by Sherri G. Jackson, 48, of Whitley City was northbound when it crossed the centerline into the southbound lane and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Milford B. Creekmore, 35, of Pine Knot. The left front tire was torn from Creekmore’s pickup and struck a southbound 1994 Ford Mustang driven by Keith A. Davis, 41, of Stearns.
Jackson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where she remained at press time Monday.
Neither Creekmore nor his passenger — 58-year-old Charles Walters of Pine Knot — received any injuries. Davis was also uninjured. All three were wearing their seat belts.
A KSP release indicated that Trooper Reed is continuing his investigation into the crash, of which drug and/or alcohol usage is suspected as a contributing factor.
