Plea deal reached in animal cruelty case

Pine Knot couple ran Heaven’s Little Angels Rescue

WHITLEY CITY —  The couple accused of operating a fraudulent animal rescue operation will escape jail time after accepting a plea agreement.

Tina E. Jones, 37, and Jason Jay Greenfield, 35, both of Pine Knot, each pled guilty in McCreary District Court Wednesday to one count of second-degree Cruelty to Animals — having initially been charged with the Class A misdemeanor for each of the animals found when authorities raided their property back in February.

The plea agreement calls for a 12-month sentence which will be conditionally discharged for two years. Each defendant to pay a $500 fine plus court costs. The couple is also limited to no more than two animals.

McCreary District Judge Cathy Prewitt accepted the agreement between County Attorney Michele Wilson Jones and public defender Carolyn Clark Cox.

The case stemmed from complaints surrounding the Heaven’s Little Angels Rescue in Pine Knot, which Jones had operated without proper registration. An inspection led Animal Control Officer Milford Creekmore II to seek warrants, based on the health of the animals and condition of the property. A total of 29 dogs and two cats were seized, but officers also discovered several carcasses.

The case also led McCreary County Fiscal Court to pass an ordinance expanding the scope of local animal control.
