WHITLEY CITY —
The McCreary County Tourist Commission needs you.
As part of a developing market strategy to bring more visitors into our area, the commission is reaching out to local groups and individuals with one simple question: Where would you take a visitor to show off McCreary County?
Volunteers are needed to “map” trails for tourists who may share their particular interest — such as hiking, off-roading, crafting, coal history, photography, etc. The resulting maps can then be developed into itineraries available on the county’s tourism website for self-guided tours.
“We need information for all kinds of trails,” County Tourism Director Ginger McCartt-West told The Record. “It doesn’t have to be an outdoor experience.”
McCartt-West added that volunteers could be “cross-trained” by taking a tour outside of their area of expertise.
Last year, the tourist commission received a $10,000 Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant which is being used to revamp the website, www.mccrearytourism.com. The commission has applied for additional ARC funding to expand marketing efforts. County Tourism Director Ginger McCartt-West told The Record Thursday that one goal is to purchase helmet cameras so that first-person video may be posted online.
“We’ve learned that video and frequent updates can help with our rankings on search engines like Google,” the director said.
The grant must be completed by June, and McCartt-West hopes to unveil at least four mapped trails with a big celebration. But first the director must plan an organizational meeting for mapping volunteers, which should be held in mid- to late-January.
If trail development isn’t your thing but you would still like to volunteer, McCartt noted that the tourism office needs greeters as well as digital photographs for its library. Anyone interested in participating in these projects should call 376-3008 or email mccrearytourism@yahoo.com.
