Agenda is routine

STEARNS — McCreary County Board of Education has a new chairperson following last Thursday’s meeting.

The first meeting of each new year always includes discussion of the board’s organization. Thursday’s meeting began with a statement read by board attorney Tim Crawford on behalf of outgoing chairperson Joyce Kidd, who cited a desire to spend more time with her family as reason to resign her position.

Vice-Chair Stewart Jones, who took his board seat in 2008, was nominated to serve as chairperson with Shirley Nunn-Wright then elected as vice-chair. Kidd abstained from both votes but resumed voting with the board’s decision to change their monthly meeting time to 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month rather than 5:15 p.m.

In other news the board:

• formally set a $1 student admission fee for athletic events, including tournament games held locally.

• approved a request from McCreary Central Cheerleading Coach Jeff Strunk to pay for three bus trips covering selected away games and competitions. The team recently won district and placed second in the regional championship.

• approved revisions to the 2009-10 McCreary County School Comprehensive Plan.

• created a full-time custodial position for central office.

• approved FY 2011 continuation grants for Family Resource/Youth Service Centers at all five school campuses.

The next regular board meeting is set to be held February 25 at 6 p.m.
