WHITLEY CITY — In an unexpected move, Adam Phillips has announced his resignation as McCreary County Tourism and Community Events Coordinator effective Friday, February 26.
Phillips submitted his resignation letter to the McCreary County Tourism Commission during their January meeting last Thursday. According to com-mission chair Gabriel Jones, Phillips told the board he had been balancing his tourism duties with a position at WHAY 98.3 FM which left him little time for personal commitments. It was a sentiment echoed by Phillips himself in a statement released Monday.
“There are several reasons for my resignation, but the most important reason is my family,” Phillips said. “I will now be able to return to working in radio full time and will also have more time for my family, including my sons Samuel (age 8) and Gabriel (age 6). After all, there is no more important job than being a parent.”
Phillips also said he feels that “great progress has been made in the local tourism industry in recent years” and it’s “on the right track for progress in the future.” He concluded by wishing the Commission and his as-yet-unnamed successor the best in moving for-ward.
McCreary Fiscal Court hired Phillips for the newly created Coordinator position in May 2008, after revising the job description formerly known as Tourism Executive Director. The change came at the request of the commission in the hopes of enhancing collaboration among local committees organizing various community events.
Prior to his hiring, Phillips had chaired the Tourism Commission board and was WHAY’s News Director. He has also served with the McCrearyFest/WinterFest Committee.
