STEARNS — The Kentucky Center for School Safety has recognized the McCreary County school system for their participation in the Pledge Against Bullying campaign.
The district got the most signatures in the state with 2,655 students, teachers and citizens vowing to stand up to bullying.
During last Tuesday's school board meeting, Supt. Arthur D. Wright presented McCreary County Middle School Principal Jason Creekmore with an award from the Center. Creekmore first heard of the campaign and started the effort at his school, where it spread through-out the district.
“I was pretty happy to see so many people sign,” Creekmore said. “When you look at a district like Fayette or Jefferson County, with 20-30 times the population, I was pleased to find we were still number one.”
In other news, Pine Knot Inter-mediate Principal Mitzi Stephens presented the school’s annual progress report to the board.
PKI’s 88.3 Accountability Index is up from its score of 65 back in 2005. The school has also met all 12 of its federal No Child Left Behind goals.
Regarding individual subjects, Stephens expressed some concern that science scores had dropped from 113 in 2007 to 98 in 2008 but she noted that the score is still above target. The school has been targeting on-demand writing, and Stephens told the board that students had exhibited a 20-point gain over the course of one month with 52 percent scoring proficient or distinguished.
“We feel really good about our writing right now,” Stephens said.
Attendance is also a strong suit, consistently ranging from 94 to 97 percent.
“I want to commend Mrs. Stephens and her staff,” Superintendent Wright said. “About a month ago, we conducted a pretty thorough audit; the school continues to improve.”
The next school board meeting is scheduled for March 26 at 5 p.m.
