Former McCreary teacher dies 914 Bypass wreck

Husband injured in two-vehicle collision

SOMERSET —  A former McCreary County teacher died last Wednesday in a two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of KY 914 West and Pisgah Drive in Pulaski County.

The accident involved a 2012 Dodge pickup truck driven by Hailey Flynn, 19, of Somerset with passenger Kayla Williams, 19, of Eubank. According to Shannon Smith of the Somerset Police Department, Flynn collided with a 2007 Cadillac driven by Dexter McKinney, 64, with passenger Sharyan Lee Kidd McKinney, 62, both of Monticello.

A retired teacher, Mrs. McKinney taught for many years at the former Pine Knot Middle School. Mr. McKinney retired from the Kentucky State Police as a detective, running unsuccessfully for McCreary County Judge-Executive in 1998 and 2002.

According to Smith, Flynn struck McKinney’s vehicle while attempting to cross the westbound lanes on KY 914. The impact sent McKinney’s vehicle into the grass median between the lanes where it came to a rest. Flynn’s vehicle came to a rest on the road, blocking an eastbound lane.

Both drivers and passengers were treated on the scene by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS personnel, then transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sharyan McKinney was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Anthony Gossett.

The roadway on KY 914 was partially blocked for over three hours while the scene was being investigated.

The investigation is being continued by accident reconstructionists Sgt. Greg Martin and Detective Larry Patterson of the Somerset Police Department.

Funeral services for Mrs. McKinney were held Saturday at the Lockett’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Wayne County. She is survived by her husband, four children, 11 grandchildren as well as countless relatives and friends.

Complete obituary information can be found on Page 6A.
