STEARNS —
Members of the McCreary County Educational Development Foundation appeared before the local school board last Thursday to share plans for a field day to be hosted by Somerset Community College’s McCreary Center later this spring.
“Two of the best kept secrets in McCreary County are the Center and the Foundation,” Foundation chair Nancy Nevels said. “Our purpose is to serve as a bridge between the school system and the McCreary Center. We’re here seeking input and assistance so that we can better reach that goal.”
McCreary Center Director Gayle Borders spoke of how, with the Foundation’s help, the campus has grown from a couple of classes to two buildings. The Center offers not only general education classes but students can also earn two-year degrees in programs such as Business and Culinary Arts. The facility also houses the local Adult Education Center.
Borders invited school board members to hold a future meeting at the campus. “The more we get the word out, the better opportunity we have to help local students,” she said.
To that end, the Center is hosting an Education Celebration on April 20. Dr. Michael Searcy, an SCC communications instructor, noted that the event is open to McCreary Central High juniors and seniors — who would have a chance to meet SCC staff and students in several departments.
In other news, the McCreary County Board of Education approved next year’s school calendar. The 2012-13 school year will should open for students on August 16 with the last day of school tentatively set for May 9.
Board members also approved:
• Buddy Wilson of Crabtree Wilson Insurance Agency as the agent of record for WRM America and Ohio Casualty. Should either company win the bid for the school system’s insurance package later this spring, the local agent would be able to handle the contract.
• a contract with Bluegrass Cellular, as the only bidder for cell phone service for the 2012-13 year.
• a contract with Highland Telephone Cooperative for long distance service. Board member Roxanne Shook, who works for HTC, abstained from the vote.
• the purchase of math and reading textbooks for Pine Knot Intermediate School in the amount of $34,364.57.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for March 22 at 6 p.m.
