WHITLEY CITY —
As they continue to work toward enhanced status, McCreary County 911 officials are encountering a few residential areas which need to be re-addressed.
Most recently, the opening of the new KY 92 has created the need for new addressing along roads such as Lloyd Martin, Poley Ellis, Poplar Ford and Cal Hill Spur.
“Even if the road name stays the same, house numbers are likely to change,” noted McCreary County Judge-Executive Doug Stephens.
McCreary 911/EM Director Rudy Young also gave the Record two examples of areas which were not marked or incorrectly marked in the past.
One example involves two roads, both of which are named Possum Trail, located off Winding Ridge Road just north of Whitley City. The entrances to the two roads from Winding Ridge are nearly parallel, but while one dead-ends, the other leads into the first. To complicate matters further, the 911 map indicates that one of the roads should actually have been named Raccoon Trail.
The second example involves a portion of Lower Shirt Factory Road near its intersection with East Appletree Road in Revelo. Several residents in that area were incorrectly given East Appletree Road address numbers.
Young acknowledged that some residents have expressed dismay at having to change their addresses, but he stressed the importance of having the correct numbers for the enhanced system.
“If everything works properly, when you dial 911, your number and name should pop up as well as your location on the map,” the director said. “Having accurate information is crucial for the system to work.”
As the department works through the addressing issues, Young said he could not give a proper estimate on when enhanced 911 services would finally be available. However the county did clear another large hurdle recently with approval from Kentucky’s Commercial Mobile Radio Service (CMRS) Board to accept wireless calls.
In the past, wireless calls to 911 were routed through the Kentucky State Police Post in London. On July 13, KSP 911 Coordinator Dustin Abbott sent Young notification that wireless calls would be released to the local dispatch center. Wireless providers have six months to comply with the change.
The first volume payment of $5,789.93 should be released to the county on August 1.
