WHITLEY CITY —
The McCreary County Tourist Commission is in the process of wrapping up two projects aimed at bringing more visitors in.
The commission’s Get Outside Yourself Trails project has completed videos for hikers and coal history buffs.
Greg Whitis of the McCreary County Hiking Club told the Record that the hiking itinerary features Blue Heron Loop, Barron Fork Loop, Split Bow Arch, Buffalo Canyon Loop, and 3 Forks of Beaver Loop.
Shane Gilreath worked on the Coal Heritage Trail which highlights stops in Stearns, Blue Heron, Barthell and Barren Fork.
“It’s like getting to know someone you think you already know,” Gilreath said of working on the project.
McCreary County Tourism Director Ginger McCartt added that more videos are planned for ATV, horseback, canoeing and shopping.
Trail videos should be posted on the tourism website by the end of September. Besides giving potential tourists a first-hand look at what McCreary County has to offer, McCartt noted that adding video to the site should improve its visibility on web search engines.
The Get Outside Yourself Trails Project was funded through an ARC (Appalachian Regional Commission) grant and involved some 150 McCreary Countians.
“I’m hopeful that this project is the beginning of a community-based practice,” McCartt said, adding that she would also like to involve local schools in upcoming projects.
The next meeting of the McCreary County Tourist Commission is scheduled for this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the visitors’ center on Geary Street.
