WHITLEY CITY —
A McCreary County Detention Center inmate who has become known for his multiple escapes was formally indicted last week by the local grand jury.
Joey Spradlin, 33, of Revelo was discovered to be missing from the McCreary County Detention Center the night of June 17 — but jail officials reportedly learned of the escape from an unlikely source.
According to McCreary County Sheriff Gus Skinner, the 911 Dispatch Center received a call that Sunday night that Spradlin was awaiting a ride at McCreary Apartments on Old Bailey Road. When the jail was contacted to check the tip, it was determined that Spradlin had indeed escaped.
Spradlin was supposed to have been on lockdown after a previous escape in April. He was recaptured July 5.
The grand jury has charged Spradlin with second-degree Escape and first-degree Persistent Felony Offender (PFO). Spradlin’s prior convictions involve criminal mischief and theft-related charges dating back to 2001.
Several others have also been indicted as PFOs.
Troy L. Baird, 36, of Strunk, has been charged with Receiving Stolen Property Over $500 but Less Than $10,000 as well as second-degree PFO. On September 12, Baird was found in possession of a Milwaukee Electro magnetic drill reported stolen from Wasatch Railroad Contractors. He was previously convicted of second-degree manslaughter and first-degree robbery in June 2008.
Estle Phillips, 37, of Stearns, has been charged with Receiving Stolen Property Over $500 but Less Than $10,000 as well as first-degree PFO. On September 7, Phillips was found with a 2011 Dodge Ram reported stolen from JR Jackson Auto Sales. He was previously convicted of theft-related charges in 2007 and drug trafficking in 2004.
David Allen Matthews, 34, of Winfield was indicted last month for Theft By Unlawful Taking Over $500 But Less Than $10,000. This month the grand jury added second-degree Persistent Felony Offender as a charge based on evidence Matthews was convicted of drug possession in Louisiana two years ago.
Ester Goins, 28, of Parkers Lake was indicted last month for Receiving Stolen Property Over $500 But Less Than $10,000. This month the grand jury added second-degree Persistent Felony Offender as a charge based on evidence Goins was convicted of fleeing police and receiving stolen property in 2008.
In other October indictments, the grand jury charged:
• Carl Spradlin, 43, of Pine Knot — first-degree Promoting Contraband. On July 17, Spradlin brought one Oxycodone tablet into the McCreary County Detention Center.
• Carla S. Buis, 35 — six counts of second-degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. Between September 1 and September 3, Buis cashed six checks with Michael Kidd’s forged signature which totaled $1,082.13.
• Chasity J. Atwell, 40 — second-degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. On September 10, Atwell cashed a $396 money order meant for Stearns Residence Center.
• Randy L. Jones, 41, of Williamsburg — two counts of Flagrant Non-Support for one child each.
• Jackie E. Miller, 48, of Jefferson City, TN — Flagrant Non-Support for two minor children.
Readers are reminded that an indictment is a charge and should not be considered as evidence of an individual’s guilt. Anyone under indictment is presumed innocent until and unless convicted in a court of law.
