WHITLEY CITY — Last week McCreary County bid farewell of one of our former government officials.

Dora Waters, 92, died Thursday at the Whitley City home of her daughter, Jean Ross, following a prolonged illness.

Waters became County Court Clerk in a rather unusual manner. Homer Thomas, who took office in 1954, passed away while serving his second term. Thomas’ widow Opal was appointed as clerk until a special election earned Waters’ husband Mark the office. When Mark Waters was shot and killed, Mrs. Waters filled the balance of the unexpired term through 1961.

Dora Waters was born at Pine Knot on February 17, 1917, the daughter of the late Calvin and Viola Rollins Richmond.

Survivors include her children, Bob Waters and wife, Mary; Rudy Waters; Ronnie Waters and wife, Susan; Jean Ross and husband, Bob; Ken Waters and wife, Diane; George (Tweedy) Waters and wife, Geneva all of Whitley City, Kentucky; Markie Nevels and husband, Dean, Cincinnati, Ohio; Chuck Waters and wife, June, Somerset; and Becky Gregory and husband, David, Burlington, Kentucky.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Whitley City Church of God with Rev. Randall Brown; Rev. Eddie King; Rev. Bruce Dixon and Rev. Darrell Waters officiating. Burial was in Laurel Cemetery.
