WHITLEY CITY —
Congressman Hal Rogers was in McCreary County on Wednesday to help other federal and local dignitaries break ground for a $1.5 million sewer expansion project along Williamsburg Street.
The ceremony itself was held at the South Kentucky RECC building but the project will serve some 120 homes in the project area.
One of those homeowners is Scotty Vanderpool, who has served with the McCreary County Water District since 1998.
“I look forward to participating,” Vanderpool said. “It will increase the value of my home as well as improving our community.”
LTC Andamo E. Ford, US Army Corps of Engineers (Huntington), represented the PRIDE/Corps of Engineers Section 531 program, which contributed $905,000 to the project. “The Corps takes particular pride in a project that will help so many residents,” he said.
Rogers spoke of the $5.8 million which PRIDE has invested in McCreary County since its 1997 inception. He noted that in PRIDE’s service region, some 36,000 straight pipes and failing septic systems have been replaced. “This project will add to the total,” he said.
The congressman also announced $12,500 in funding for McCreary County’s 2010 PRIDE Environmental Education Grant recipients and PRIDE Environmental Education Outreach Program. McCreary Academy and Pine Knot Intermediate received $4,000 each while Pine Knot Primary received $2,000. The McCreary County Extension Service also received $2,500.
