STEARNS —
The relative quiet of the weekend was shattered late Sunday with the report of an armed robbery at a local convenience store.
McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Jerry Meadows is leading the investigation into the incident, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night. According to Sheriff Gus Skinner, a lone white male wearing a ski mask walked into Raider One Stop, located on Wilburn K. Ross Highway, brandishing a black handgun and demanding money. No one was injured during the incident, and the suspect fled on foot along Cabin Creek Road toward the county road garage.
Efforts to track the suspect with a K-9 unit were not successful due to the number of variables in the area. Assisting at the scene were deputies Joe Horne and Ethan Jones, Fish and Wildlife Officer Chris King, U.S. Forest Service Officer Tim Grooms, National Park Service Officer Raymond Little, and Kentucky State Police troopers Wendell Higginbotham, Tony Dingess, and Duane Foley.
The suspect is described as being between 6’ and 6’2” tall with a slim build. He was wearing a baggy shirt and blue jeans. Sheriff Skinner added that officers are also investigating the possible involvement of a small maroon car which was reportedly seen driving back and forth on Cabin Creek Road not long before the robbery took place.
