MANCHESTER —
McCreary County’s 9-10 year old All-Stars took their game to the 4th District Tournament in Manchester last week but the results turned out to be disappointing as they dropped out with two straight losses.
North Laurel knocked McCreary out of the winners bracket 15-5 on Monday in a game that was up for grabs through the first four innings before a nine run outburst by North in the final two frames.
On Wednesday McCreary was eliminated by the Corbin White team by a 12-3 score.
In Monday’s opener McCreary got off to a solid start retiring the first two batters in the top of the first but North was able to string together a pair of singles in front of a walk and another single for a two run, two out rally to jump out in front.
McCreary would answer back in the bottom of the inning though. Blake Corder led off with a single to center field and an out later four consecutive batters reached base, three via bases on balls and the other after being hit with a pitch. The wildness resulted in two McCreary runs to tie the score but North dodged the first of several bullets on the night by getting a force out at home on a ground ball by Ryan Bruce for the second out and then a strikeout to end the inning with the bases still loaded.
Stranding three runners on base was a theme repeated too often on the evening as amazingly McCreary would do the same in the next three innings while pushing just two runs across the plate.
After North failed to score in the second McCreary was able to take a 3-2 lead when Jeremiah Jones scored on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a walk. With two outs McCreary would again load the bases but come up short in a bid to extend the lead.
North Laurel would score once in the top of the third to tie the score before taking the lead in the fourth after McCreary left the bases loaded for a third straight time.
With North Laurel leading 6-3 after scoring three times in the top of the fourth McCreary would trim the lead by one as Grant Hamner scored on a ground out by Bruce. Two more walks would follow to again load the bases but McCreary again could not come up with a two out hit and the runners again were stranded.
In the top of the fifth North came up with a big inning scoring six times after there were two outs and one runner on base. Two walks, two singles and two errors after back to back strikeouts allowed them to push the lead to 12-4.
Nathaniel Griffis lead off the bottom of the fifth with a single and would come in to score on a ground out by Hunter Troxell to make it 12-5 but McCreary’s offense would not get another run across the plate. North Laurel added three more runs in the top of the sixth while McCreary stranded two more, giving them 15 runners left on base in the 15-5 loss.
McCreary collected just four hits in the game but also drew 16 walks and one hit batter. The base hits were one each by Blake Corder, Nathaniel Griffis, Grant Hamner and Ryan Bruce.
On Wednesday McCreary returned to begin thier attempt to play their way out of the losers bracket which would take wins on five consecutive days to do. The first hurdle, Corbin however turned out to be one they could not get across and they fell 12-3 to end their season.
McCreary was able to grab a first inning lead scoring twice after holding Corbin scoreless in the top of the first but Corbin would score in every inning after that getting one in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth, three more in the fifth and one final run in the sixth to coast to the win and eliminate McCreary.
