BURNSIDE —
The McCreary County 9-10 year old all star team brought home the area championship in dominant fashion over the weekend at Burnside beating Pulaski County 17-5 on Saturday and then blanking Wayne County 17-0 on Sunday in the championship game.
The McCreary All Stars wasted no time in jumping on top as they put nine runs on the board to open the game against Pulaski County. McCreary pounded out nine hits in the first inning including triples by Nathaniel Griffis and Hunter Troxell.
McCreary would add one more run in the top of the second to make it 10-0 before going scoreless in the third.
Pulaski finally broke through in the bottom of the inning scoring twice to cut the lead to eight runs.
Both teams would score again over the next two frames to make it an 11-3 score but McCreary would break through again in the top of the sixth scoring six times on three walks, three hits and an error with the big blow coming from Nathaniel Griffis who knocked in four runs with an inside the park grand slam with two outs that made the score 17-3.
Pulaski would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final 17-5.
The early big lead allowed McCreary was able to save their pitching for the Wayne County game on Sunday. The six innings were spread out among five different players. Starter Blake Corder was pulled before reaching the 20 pitch mark which would have made it mandatory for him to rest one day before pitching again. As it turned out he was the only pitcher McCreary would need in the final against Wayne County on Sunday evening. Corder pitched all four inning of the 17-0 blowout throwing just 66 pitches, 11 short of the maximum 75 that any pitcher can throw on a single day.
Just like the previous game McCreary jumped on top early and never allowed their opponent to feel as if they were in the game. After a fly out to lead off the game McCreary’s next two hitters reached after being hit by pitches. A single by Grant Hamner brought in those two runs and after a walk to Ethan Stephens a two out double by Alex Whitehead brought in two more to give McCreary a 4-0 lead.
Those four runs would be all that was needed for Corder who struck out ten of the sixteen batters he faced and allowed just three pitches to be put into play. He would walk three batters and one would reach on a error. Wayne County’s only hit came on an unusual play in the third inning with two out and a runner on first. A ground ball hit to the right side hit the runner who had reached with a leadoff walk. By rule that runner is called out, which was the third out of the inning, but the batter is credited with a single and the ball is dead. So oddly the only Wayne player to record a hit didn’t actually reach base.
Following the four run first McCreary put a lot more room between them and Wayne with seven more in the second. A walk, two hit batters, singles by Corder and Ryan Bruce and a long double that one hopped the left field fence by Alex Whitehead gave McCreary an 11-0 lead.
The offense would continue in the third as singles by Riley Richmond and Nathaniel Griffis and a triple to right field by Corder helped six more runs cross the plate for a 17-0 lead after three innings. The only inning McCreary failed to score was in the fourth which was the final inning of the game as the run rule then took effect.
The win advances McCreary’s 9-10 year old all stars to the district tournament along with the losers bracket winner from the area tournament which was scheduled to be completed on Monday and today.
