WHITLEY CITY —
The McCreary County Little League wrapped up the 2012 campaign over the past week playing league tournaments in four of the six divisions. 17 teams, four each in fast pitch softball, 11-12 year old baseball and 9-10 year old baseball along with five coaches pitch (7-8 year olds) teams battled it out for the championship of their respective divisions.
On Thursday night the first two championship games along with the third place games were held with the Reds coming away with the championship of the 11-12 year old division with an 11-4 victory over the Cubs. In fast pitch it was the Rays taking the victory with a 14-4 win over the Reds.
In the third place games it was the Cardinals defeating the A’s in 11-12 year olds and the Braves defeating the Marlins for third place in the fast pitch consolation game.
Friday evening the other two divisions met to determine their champions with both games going down to the final inning before being decided.
In the 9-10 year old division the Rockies scored one run in the bottom of the sixth (final inning) to break a 9-9 tie and win the championship while in the coaches pitch league the D’backs scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead and held on for the win. In the consolation games the Mudcats defeated the Braves for third place in 9-10 year olds and the A’s took third place of the coaches pitch league with a win over the White Sox.
League officials and coaches will now be working on selecting all-start teams to represent the county in various tournaments around the area over the next month.
The Record will be running team photos of all 29 youth baseball and softball teams in the sports section begining with next weeks edition.
