MONTICELLO —
A 13-0 run in the fourth quarter propelled McCreary Central’s Lady Raiders to a huge district win over Wayne County on the road Friday night. Senior Brittany King hit a pair of big three pointers during the spurt that took the Lady Raiders from clinging to a four point lead to having the game under control with a 17 point advantage.
A basket by Candance Foster with 6:41 remaining began the run. Kaylee Cotton would score four points and King would add one free throw out of two after a technical called against the Wayne County bench.
McCreary would maintain the 17 point margin holding the Lady Cards without a field goal for over the final seven minutes of the contest.
After taking a 25-20 lead to the locker room at the half McCreary would extend the lead to as much as 12 points after King scored on a put back with 2:41 left in the third period.
Wayne County however would go on an 8-3 run to end the quarter trimming the lead down to 37-30 after post player Taylor Alexander scored twice in the final minute giving her eight of Wayne’s ten third quarter points.
The Lady Cards continued the charge to open the final period as Hallie Gillespie hit from the left corner for her only basket of the game. Her trey pulled the home team to within four points at 37-33 with 7:20 remaining but they would get no closer and would not connect from the floor the rest of the way.
Following the run by McCreary Wayne got to within thirteen on four consecutive free throws but Lady Raider charity tosses by Megan Stevens and a easy lay in by Cotton pushed the lead back to the final margin.
Wayne led early by scores of 4-3 and 7-5 but back to back baskets by Foster and Cierra Terry to end the first quarter broke an 8-8 tie and the Lady Raiders held the lead the rest of the way.
A Terry three pointer to start the second quarter was followed by a put back by Cotton on the Lady Raider’s next trip down court and completed a 9-0 run and gave McCreary their largest lead of the half at 17-8.
Wayne would cut the lead to three at 22-19 just past the midway point of the quarter before Central took the five point advantage at the half.
The Lady Raiders opened the second half with a 9-2 run giving up only a pair of free throws before Wayne got their first basket with 2:11 left in the third. The field goal was the Lady Cards first since the 3:53 mark of the second period, a span of 9:42 of game time without a basket from the field.
Kaylee Cotton led McCreary with 21 points while Candance Foster added 14 and Brittany King 12.
The victory was huge for the Lady Raiders in the district battle as they moved back into a tie with Southwestern for the number one seed and practically eliminated Wayne County from contention for the number one slot.
McCreary will travel to Southwestern on Friday for a chance to take over the top spot with just one district game to follow. That contest will be at Monticello who despite coming in with just two wins nearly pulled out a win over the Lady Raiders on their home court last week. Southwestern will also have a trip to Monticello remaining so the winner of Friday’s match up will still have to win over the Lady Trojans before clinching the number one seed.
McCreary was scheduled to play at Harlan County last Tuesday but the threat of winter weather postponed the contest and it has now been rescheduled for Friday, February 1. The game with Wayne County had been originally scheduled for Thursday night but it too was postponed and moved to Friday at 6:00 PM just prior to the Pulaski County at Wayne County boys game scheduled for that night.
