STEARNS —
A 12-0 run early in the third quarter brought Corbin back from a six point half time deficit and propelled them to a win over McCreary last Tuesday.
The teams played close throughout the opening quarter with neither team gaining more that a three point edge in a sloppy quarter in which the teams combined for 11 turnovers, McCreary had six and Corbin five. Central’s Tyson Williams sank a free throw with 1:54 to go converting his third three point play of the period and giving Central an 11-10 lead at the break.
A Raider turnover to start off the second quarter led to a go ahead basket by the Redhounds but McCreary would counter with an 11-0 run that would put them in front 22-12.
McCreary would turn the ball over just once during the run and they would extend the lead to 24-13 on a Williams basket with 1:54 left in the half. Four turnovers in the final 1:26 though prevented them from adding points to the scoreboard and Corbin finished by scoring the final five points of the half to trim the margin to 24-18.
Williams would open the second half with another basket putting Central back up by eight but Corbin, after shooting just 6-26 in the first half found the other end of the gym to their liking and hit five of their first seven shots including a pair of three pointers by Zach Farley during the 12-0 run that put the Hounds up 30-26.
After a pair of Williams free throws to break up the run junior Alex Barnett stole the inbounds pass and put it in to tie the game back up at 30-30.
That would be the final time that McCreary would be that close however as Corbin outscored the Raiders 10-3 over the final 3:47 of the period.
The Raider offense was hampered by ten turnovers in the period four of which led directly to ten Corbin points.
Corbin took a 40-33 lead into the final period and still led 44-38 after hitting a pair of free throws with 2:23 remaining. McCreary was then able to take advantage of missed opportunities from the line by the Redhounds and pull back to within a basket after Barnett and Brad Corder scored to cut the lead to 44-42 with 1:44 left.
After twice missing the front end of the bonus Corbin finally hit one of two charity tosses and then following a Raider turnover hit one of two again to push the lead back to 46-42 with 1:13 to go.
After hitting 10-13 free throws through the first three quarters the Raiders began to struggle at the line themselves in the final period. Noah Duncan missed the front end of a one and one early in the period and Corder followed by missing two of three after being fouled on a three point attempt. In the final 1:07 of the game Ryan Strunk missed twice from the line and Duncan missed the first of three shots after he was fouled in the act of putting up a three pointer. McCreary was 3-9 from the line during the fourth period.
Duncan’s two free throws pulled the raiders to within three, 47-44 with just :20 remaining. A quick foul sent Corbin back to the line where they again hit one of two. Tyson Williams then scored on a put back to cut the lead back to two, 48-46 with :08 left.
Another quick foul was McCreary’s last chance but this time both charity shots would fall to give Corbin a four point advantage that would stand as Central could not score in the final seconds of the 50-46 loss.
Tyson Williams led McCreary with 19 points while Dylan Strunk scored 9 and Noah Duncan 7.
The win for Corbin was their seventh straight and improved their record to 16-7.
Friday’s scheduled game at home against Somerset was postponed due to the pending weather forecast.
The game is unlikely to be rescheduled due to it being so late in the season. With just one week remaining before district tournament week a date both teams could play on is difficult to find and both teams already have two games scheduled next week.
