MONTICELLO —
McCreary County coaches pitch All-Stars (ages 7-8) played this weekend at Wayne County in their third tournament of the summer.
The first event was a runner up finish among four teams at Burnside.
Their next tournament was held on their home fields the weekend prior to the Fourth of July. In that event McCreary rolled through their three opponents ending each of the games early via the run rule. In the championship game however against Whitley County McCreary’s defense took center stage and played a key role in claiming the first place trophy.
McCreary’s defense held Whitley County to one run in back to back innings to preserve a one run lead going into Whitley’s final at bat. With one out and the tying run on first a hard ground ball was hit to shortstop Noah Loudermilk who fielded it and stepped on second for the force out and then threw on to Maddux McKinney at first to complete the game ending double play.
This past weekend the team played at Wayne County where they split four games in a six team event.
On Friday McCreary lost a heartbreaker to Russell County who got a three run walk off home run in the bottom of the sixth to break a 12-12 tie.
On Saturday McCreary came back to hammer Wayne County “B” 21-1 to finish pool play at 1-1.
In the first round of tournament play McCreary narrowly defeated Russell “B” by a 14-12 score to move into the semifinals where they faced Wayne’s “A” team in their consecutive game amidst the triple digit heat.
McCreary would fall 12-7 to Wayne “A” to end the tournament with a 2-2 record.
The team will play at tournaments in Green County and Russell County to round out their all star season.
