MT VERNON —
After losing three out of four games McCreary Central’s struggles continued over the past week as they went 0-3 to drop their season record to 11-14.
The week began with a particularily disturbing loss at Rockcastle County on Tuesday to a Rocket team that had won only four times in twenty-one outings this season and came into the contest riding a nine game losing streak.
McCreary Central did not appear to be any trouble for the Rockets though as they took control from the outset to lead 19-10 at the first break before pushing the lead to 21 at 40-19 by the half.
The Raiders would cut into the lead in the final period outscoring Rockcastle 12-4 but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the Rockets.
Tyson Williams scored 18 points and Dylan Strunk added 15 to lead McCreary.
On Friday McCreary traveled to Wayne County to face the Cardinals for the third time this season. The Raiders lost the earlier two meetings with the Cardinals at McCreary Central and a change of venue would not change the outcome as Wayne prevailed 74-60.
The Cardinals pressure defense forced the Raiders into turning the ball over on 12 of their 28 first half possessions.
Wayne jumped to an 11-1 lead by the midway point of the opening period and led 21-11 at the break after hitting a trio of three pointers in the final two an a half minutes.
Senior Dylan Strunk knocked down a pair of threes in the first quarter to help the Raiders stay within ten points.
In the second quarter though the Cardinals opened with a 12-0 run pushing the lead to 33-11.
McCreary was able to fight back somewhat though holding the Cardinals scoreless over the final 3:44 of the half. During that span the Raiders got four free throws by Tyson Williams, a Brad Corder three pointer and a put back basket off of a missed free throw by Alex Barnett despite turning the ball over four more times. The 9-0 run allowed McCreary to trim the halftime deficit to 15 at 35-20.
A Raider turnover in the opening seconds of the second half led to a Cardinal basket but McCreary would answer with a basket by Barnett. From there though the Cardinals put the game away with the help of five more Raider turnovers prior to the four minute mark which allowed them to reel off nine unanswered points which extended the lead to 46-22.
The quarter would end with Wayne leading 54-33 after the Raiders committed a whopping eleven turnovers. They would end the game with 28 total.
In the fourth quarter a frantic pace developed that resulted in the teams combining to put 29 points on the scoreboard by the midpoint of the period. Wayne still held a 68-48 lead at that point but McCreary would close the game with a 12-6 run that would pull them to within to within 14, 74-60 at the horn.
Tyson Williams’ 20 points led McCreary scorers and Dylan Strunk added 15.
On Saturday McCreary traveled to Anderson County where they were outscored in every quarter of a 71-45 loss to the Bearcats.
Anderson County had started the season 12-0 but since had went just 3-6 which included a 59-43 win at home over Rockcastle County the night before.
The Raider’s trailed by just three, 12-9 after one period of play but a nine point Advantage by Anderson in the second led to a 33-21 halftime score.
McCreary was unable to cut into the margin in the third getting outscored18-14 and in the fourth quarter Anderson put the game away with a 20-10 advantage.
Dylan Strunk and Tyson Williams would once again led McCreary scoring twelve points each.
