STEARNS —
The Lady Raiders started their week off with their final district game of the season at home against Monticello in a game that would decide their first round opponent in the upcoming district tournament. Monticello also had their first round match up waiting to be determined by the outcome of the game. It basically boiled down to the winner would claim third place in the district and therefore face Southwestern the number 2 seed in the opening round while the loser would fall to the number four spot and have a game versus Wayne County in the opening round. The Lady Raiders had split their two district games with with Southwestern and Wayne while Monticello had been swept by Wayne by margins of 17 and 14 points but had split two games with Southwestern.
Early on it was obvious that for Monticello to win they would have to slow down Lady Raider junior Candance Foster. After Central’s first two points had been scored by Kaylee Cotton to tie the game at 2-2 Foster took over scoring the next 15 Lady Raider points which included a 6-0 run to end the period with McCreary on top 17-13.
The scoring pace fell off dramatically in the second quarter though. One of two free throw by Cierra Terry pushed the Lady Raider lead to 18-13 but Monticello would go on a 7-0 run while McCreary would go scoreless for over five minutes. Finally a basket by Foster with 1:18 to play ended the McCreary drought and tied the game at 20-20. Foster then scored again following a Monticello turnover to put McCreary back on top but Monticello would tie the score just before the buzzer to tie the game 22-22 at the half.
McCreary would reclaim the lead early in the third as Foster scored six of McCreary’s first nine points to help push the advantage to 31-27 at the 5:11 mark.
At this point Foster had scored 25 of the Lady Raiders 31 points in just 19 minutes of play but inexplicably her scoring for the night was over as she would be shut down the rest of the way.
Monticello would go on a run and end the quarter with a 13-5 scoring advantage from that point and take a 40-36 lead heading to the final period.
In the fourth quarter the Lady Raiders seemed to stay just one shot behind the entire way. Cierra Terry drilled a three pointer to start the quarter and pull McCreary to within one at 40-39. Monticello would respond every time the Lady Raiders threatened though. Three straight Lady Trojan points followed Terry’s three but Kaylee Cotton scored to trim the lead back to two with 5:46 to play. Monticello again answered this time with with four straight points. With 2:31 remaining Brittany King knocked down a three pointer to cut the lead back to three at 49-46 but a Monticello basket pushed the lead back to five.
King would add two free throws with :47 second remaining to make the score 51-48. An immediate foul sent the Lady Trojans to the line for a bonus with :47 still on the clock. A miss on the first shot gave McCreary the ball with a chance to tie the game down three.
McCreary’s offense patiently looked for a opportunity but found none and took a timeout with :17 remaining. Monticello’s defense continued to frustrate the Lady Raiders who were still not able to find a shot to their liking and ended up with a forced three point attempt by Terry from 25 feet at the buzzer. The shot did not come close to falling and the Lady Trojans survived to claim the 51-48 win.
McCreary hit just 18 of 55 attempts from the floor with Foster hitting 11 of 17 of those leaving the rest of the team with a 7-38 shooting performance. Foster’s 25 points was the only Lady Raider total in double figures.
On Thursday night the Lady Raiders suffered a 71-64 loss at North Laurel. Candance Foster once again led McCreary with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Kaylee Cotton scored 11 and Kisha Gibson 10 in the loss.
On Saturday McCreary snapped their three game losing streak with a 77-53 win at Pineville.
