STEARNS —
The McCreary Central wrestling team competed in the 8th Region tournament at Johnson Central High School on Saturday and captured fourth place in the event. In the process they qualified six wrestlers to participate in the state wrestling tournament which will begin on Friday and conclude Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park Arena.
The Raiders had four wrestlers to finish as regional runner-up and two that finished in third place in their respective weight class. All six of those advance to the state competition where they will battle in a double elimination tournament with the top four finishers from the other seven regions. Each bracket in the 14 separate weight classes consists of 32 entrants.
Two other representatives from McCreary Central will go to the state tournament to serve as alternates in case one of the 8th Regions representatives is unable to wrestle. Those two, Kevin Stephens in the 120 lb. class and Jimmy Stephens in the 220 lb. class earned their position by finishing fifth in the regional competition.
Raider wrestlers who are scheduled to compete are Codey Stephens at 106 lb., Josh Phillips at 120 lb., Larry Sammons at 152 lb., D.J. Parriman at 160 lb., Richard Parriman at 170 lb. and Cole Jones (photo was not available) at 195 lb.
Codey Stephens finished as region runner-up for the second year in a row and will make his second appearance at the state tournament. Last year he was 2-2 in his four matches at the state tournament which was held in Frankfort.
Larry Sammons is the Raider wrestler with the most previous state tournament experience. He first made it to the state competition as an 8th grader in 2008 where he went 1-2 in the 135 lb. class. Sammons then wrestled at 152 lb. as a freshmen and went 0-2, then dropped back down to 140 lb. as a sophomore and again went 1-2. As a junior last year he again dropped weight class all the way back to 135 lb. where he finished 1-2 for the third time. This year he has moved back up to the 152 lb. class where he finished third in the region.
Josh Phillips finished as region runner up in the 145 lb. class and will make his second trip to the state meet. He finished 1-2 last year at the 140 lb. weight.
D.J. Parriman also finished as region runner up at 160.lb and will also make his second appearance in the state tournament. Last year he was 0-2in the 145 lb. class.
Two Raiders will make their first appearance in the state tournament. Senior Richard Parriman finished as region runner up in the 170 lb. class and Chris Jones who finished third at 195 lb.
With the addition of the six entrants this year McCreary has sent 67 wrestlers to the state tournament since 2000 and has had at least one competitor each year except 2001.
