LONDON —
McCreary County’s 11-12 year old All-Stars in Girls Fast Pitch got the 2012 youth baseball / softball all star tournament season off to a tremendous start on Saturday by handing Corbin a 26-6 drubbing at London in a game shortened to four innings due to the mercy rule.
The win was a first a McCreary County fast pitch team in All-Star competition. McCreary quickly jumped on top taking a 10-6 lead after just two innings and would go on to shut out Corbin while adding 16 more runs over the final two frames.
The win advanced the team to the winners bracket semi-finals of the ten team, double elimination event. Should they continue to win it would take three more victories to claim the championship. The first obstacle in that task will be the winners of Sunday’s Harlan vs. North Laurel game who they face on Wednesday evening at 8 PM. Win or lose they will play again on Thursday or Friday.
In boys all star action the 7-8 year old coaches pitch team saw their first action over the weekend in a four team event at Burnside where they completed a successful tournament by winning three of four games and finishing in second place.
McCreary first played two pool play games where they finished 2-0 with a win over Burnside 19-8 to start the tourney off and then beat the Wayne County “B” team by a 24-6 score.
Bracket tournament play got underway following that with McCreary advanceing past Burnside again, this time with an 11-2 score which placed them in the championship game against Whitley County.
In the finals McCreary and Whitley played close. McCreary took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second but Whitley County’s bats came alive for five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the inning. McCreary would score three times to tie the game back up in the top of the third but Whitley added one more to their total to forge back out front.
The game was again tied at 11-11 but Whitley County continued to push runs across scoring the run limit six times to take a 17-11 lead and then got help on the defensive side with a double play that kept McCreary off the scoreboard for a frame in the top of the fifth. Whitley would take full advantage of the break adding four more runs in the bottom of the inning to reach the ten run lead, 21-11 needed to end the game via the mercy rule thus preventing McCreary their last chance at bat in the final inning in which no run limit is in effect.
This weekend McCreary County will host their own coaches pitch tournament with up to seven teams expected to participate in the event which will began on Friday evening and continue Saturday. Teams and schedules were not yet available by press time.
