MIDDLESBORO —
A cold shooting night which included a fourth quarter that should be labled as frozen solid ended the Lady Raider hopes of earning the number one seed for the upcoming district tournament and instead put them in another battle with Monticello tonight to decide the third and fourth seeds. The winner of tonights match up at McCreary will take the third seed and face Southwestern in the opening round of the district tournament while the loser will finish fourth and will take on top seeded Wayne County.
In last Monday’s contest at Monticello the Lady Raiders struggled shooting the ball all night but still managed to lead on several occasions throughout the contest’s first three periods and early into the fourth.
McCreary held the lead 10-6 after one quarter and 21-20 at the half in a game that saw the lead change hands nine times.
Monticello would go on an 8-0 run late in the second quarter turning a 17-12 Lady Raider lead into a 20-17 advantage of their own but McCreary would score the final four points including a short jumper in the lane by Candance Foster as the horn sounded after Monticello had turned the ball over.
After Monticello scored to regain the lead to start the third period the Lady Raiders went on a 10-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 31-25 following a pair of free throws by Brittany King with 3:07 to go.
The Lady Trojans would rally back though to take a one point, 33-32 lead with one minute left after McCreary twice turned the ball over. Central would end the quarter with a one point lead however on a put back basket by Kaylee Cotton.
McCreary would open the fourth quarter with back to back baskets by Candance Foster to push their lead to 38-33 but from that point the Lady Raider shooting touch would go into a deep freeze scoring just one more field goal in the contest to go along with two free throws in the final :18 seconds.
Monticello used the Lady Raider scoring drought to full advantage scoring twelve unanswered points to take a 45-38 lead before Foster would score the final McCreary field goal on a lay up with 2:14 on the clock ending a scoreless streak that lasted 4:58 seconds.
From there all the Lady Trojans would need were free throws and hitting just three of seven would suffice as McCreary could not find a way to get the ball in the net. Monticello’s lead grew to as much as 48-40 in the final minute before the Lady Raiders hit two of four charity tosses in the final seconds to make the final score 48-42.
Candance Foster and Kaylee Cotton each scored 15 points to lead McCreary. Cotton pulled down 10 rebounds. Overall McCreary shot a terrible 16-64 (25%) from the floor and hit just 2-19 (11%) from three point range.
A win would have put McCreary in a position to gain a first place tie with Wayne County by beating Monticello tonight.
