Lorella Wood of Pine Knot submitted these photos and article. Pleasant and Mary were her great grandparents. Pleasant was the son of Jesse Walker, believed to be first jailer in Whitley County. Jesse was the son of Renelder Walker, from which most of the Walkers in McCreary and Whitley Counties descend.
Renelder Walker was born in the mid seventeen hundreds in MD to Nathaniel and Elizabeth Walker. After Nathaniel died in 1766, Elizabeth and Renelder moved to Wilkes County, NC. Renelder married Mary Wilcoxson, niece of Daniel Boone, in 1778. Mary was the daughter of John and Sarah Boone Wilcoxson (daughter of Squire Boone and Sarah Morgan and sister of Daniel Boone). Renelder and Mary came to Whitley County around 1800. They had 13 children. Jesse and Mary are the only two that stayed in Whitley County, the others moved to Mo. Jesse married Peggy Bishop and Mary married Moses Gatliff. After Renelder died, his wife Mary also went to MO to live with her children. Most of the Walkers in McCreary and Whitley Counties descend from Jesse Walker who is believed to be the first jailer of Whitley County. Two of Jesse’s granddaughters married Hamlin brothers and most of these descendants live in McCreary County.
