Journeys End

Elsie Barrett of Marshes Siding submitted these photos and related a story told to her by her late former mother-in-law, Connie Waters of Whitley City. Connie told about their friends, Cuyler and Helen Baker, and how they came to McCreary County.

A post card with a photo of the city home of Cuyler and Helen Baker, inscribed (Real Photo Made by: P.L Huckins, 1137 Barry Ave., Chicago) was postmarked Sept. 1926 in Waukegan, IL, it was mailed to Mrs. E.V. (Connie) Waters, Whitley City, KY. The card read: “Dear Connie, we reached home safely last night. This is a picture of our house. Virgil will leave for home either Saturday or Sunday night. I will send you a telegram.”

The Bakers, according to the story told by Connie, had accomplished what they wanted in life, came to McCreary County with their children, Albert, John and Philomela and built a cabin. They called it Journey’s End. This is believed to be how the road got its name.
