Edgar Stephens

Edgar Stephens, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Whitley City, Kentucky, on Thursday, August 2, 2012.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Pine Knot Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel Ridener officiating and special music by Bill Stephens and family.  Interment was at the Hayes Creek Cemetery.  

Mr. Stephens had been a coal miner having last worked for Greenwood Land and Mining.  He worked for D. H. Campbell, Inc. for many years.  He had been a member of the Hayes Creek Church of God and had served as a Corporal in the United States Army from 1951 – 1953.

Born December 11, 1929 at Rock Creek in McCreary County, he was the son of the late John Prince and Bertha (Angel) Stephens.  Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother Artie Stephens and two sisters Goldie Denham and Geneva Lantern.  Surviving family include his wife Shirley (Goodwin) Stephens of Whitley City whom he married November 19, 1960.  He and Shirley have a daughter Linda Diane Spradlin and her husband David of Chatsworth, Georgia, and two sons; Michael Wayne Stephens and his wife Linda Kay of Lexington and Jeffrey Scott of Whitley City.  He also has a sister Evelyn Stephens of Pine Knot.

Edgar was a Kentucky Colonel.    He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his neighbors and friends.  More than anything, he enjoyed genealogy and had many books and records of McCreary County families.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
