Whitley City —     John Stephen Monday, age 69 of Gardnerville, Nevada, passed away quietly on January 30, 2012 at his home. He had been fighting various forms of cancer for the last two years.

    Steve was born September 16, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio to John w. and Agnes B. Olsen Monday. He is a graduate of Sullivan High School, Kingsport, Tennessee in 1960 and joined the United States Air Force and served on the island of Crete for 3 years and after returning he was discharged at Travis AFB, Fairfield, California. He operated a shoe repair shop for many years in Palo Alto, California, before moving to Lake Tahoe and than to Gardnerville were he lived for the last ten years. He married Diana J. Babbel in 1964 in Carson City and they divorced in 1971. From this union came two children, Shannon Lee and Michelle Ellen Monday.

    His father and mother precede him in death.

    He is survived by his son, Shannon Monday of Durango, Colorado and his daughter, Michelle and (Matthew) Guessetto of Chuluota, Florida, two grandsons, Jacob and Daniel Guessetto, Chuluota, FL, stepmother Gloria Monday, Cassellberry, Florida; brothers John M. Monday and (Vickie), Casselberry, FL, Larry A. Monday, Burnside, KY; sister, Amy Monday McNabb and Steve McNabb, Denton, Texas. Three special stepdaughters, as Steve likes to introduce them, Rachael Orlando of Berkeley, Robyne Orlando and Rebecca Rifenburg of Palo Alto.

    Steve’s request has been for cremation and no services. Capital City Cremation is in charge of the arrangements. Michelle and family will bring his ashes to Neeley’s Creek Cemetery, Alpine, Kentucky at a later date and bury him next to his father.
