COLUMBIA —
McCreary County’s 7-8 year old coaches pitch all-star team continued their summer tournament play over the weekend in a twelve team event in Columbia.
The tournament was set up with four pools of three teams each. Each team would play the other two in their pool to begin the tournament and the results from the pool play would determine the seeding for the single elimination tournament that followed.
The other two teams in the pool with McCreary was the Campbellsville all-stars team that McCreary beat convincingly two times last weekend at Russell Springs and the Adair County “B’ team.
McCreary opened play on Friday night with another easy win over Campbellsville 17-3. The Saturday morning game against Adair County Red was nearly as easy with McCreary pulling out an 18-5 win.
By winning their pool McCreary earned a bye past the first round of the single elimination tournament and had to wait some three hours before finally facing the Central Kentucky Aces, also of Campbellsville, in the quarterfinals. McCreary was just able to get by the Aces by scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth to break an 8-8 tie after the Aces had scored five runs in the top of the inning to tie the game.
McCreary’s run came to a close in the semifinals though as another Campbellsville team, the “Dirt Dawgs” unleashed a powerful offensive attack and knocked McCreary from the tournament by a score of 20-7.
In three tournaments so far this sumer the McCreary “A” team’s record stands at 11-3.
In other activities at the Columbia tournament McCreary’s Blake Corder tied for top honors in a home run derby by hitting seven of ten pitches past the designated home run marker.
