LEXINGTON —
The McCreary Central Wrestling Team turned in a very strong performance on Saturday taking second place honors out of fifteen teams at Tates Creek High School in Lexington.
Raider wrestlers claimed the championship in three weight classes while capturing a pair of second places, three third places and a fourth in the event.
Junior Codey Stephens was a perfect 5-0 and won first place in the 106 lb.. class as did Ryan Griffis at 132 lb. and DJ Parriman in the 170 lb. class.
Mike Parris at 126 lb. and Dakota Engler in 285 lb. advanced to the championship bout of their class before taking a loss and finished with second place medals.
Losing in the semi-finals but bouncing back to win the third place bout for McCreary was Byron Griffis in the 113 lb. class, Nathaniel Prosser in 182 lb. and Josh Staten at 195 lb..
Chevy Genoe took fourth in the 120 lb class and JC McCullough finished 8th at 138 lb.
In their prior event McCreary finished 13th out of 25 teams in the Woodford County Invitational with Stephens winning the first place medal, DJ Parriman taking third, Ryan Griffis and Josh Staten taking sixth in their weight classes.
Coming into the season Raider Wrestling Coach Jamie Payne was expecting somewhat of a rebuilding year after losing four seniors out of the six wrestlers who qualified for the state wrestling meet last year so he has been pleasantly surprised how well this years team has come along as the Regional competition approaches on February 9.
The Raider’s 136 points in the tournament at Tates Creek was just seven behind the host school’s winning 143 point total and was accomplished with wrestlers representing only ten of the fourteen possible weight classes.
The Raiders will be very busy over the coming weeks preparing for the 8th Region Tournament which will be at Sheldon Clark. This Saturday they will compete at Wayne County followed the next weekend in Knoxville at Halls HS. Then depending on the outcome at Wayne County they will participate in a State Duels Tournament at Fern Creek in Louisville or in a duels tournament at Danville. The weekend prior to the regional event they will travel to North Oldham for their last tune up before the regional tournament at Sheldon Clark located in Inez, Martin County. The State Tournament the following weekend at the Kentucky Horse Park will include the top four finishers of each weight class from each of the eight regions competing in a 32 man bracket for a state title in each of the 14 weight classes.
