MONTICELLO —
The McCreary Central Wrestling Team finished second to Wayne County in the Regional Duels Tournament held Saturday at Wayne County. The runner up finish earned the nine man team a spot in the State Duels tournament which will be held at Louisville’s Fern Creek High School on January 26.
McCreary won their first two duels in the five team event beating Danville 42-24 and Madison Southern 48-30. Champion Wayne County was next up for the Raiders and the Cardinals prevailed by a 60-18 score leaving the Raiders to face Perry Central for the runner up trophy and the bid to the state meet.
McCreary started slowly against Perry, losing by a pin in each of the first two weight classes and then in two more classes in which McCreary had no one to compete. The Raiders would have to concede a 6-0 loss in five weight classes in which they have no one to compete in unless the opposing team also has a void at that weight class.
Central would work their way back into the match however and trail by a 36-33 score going into the final match. Needing a four point major decision or better to take the win senior Mike Parris took care of business in quick fashion earning the Raiders six points with a pin in the first period to give McCreary the 39-36 win and the berth in the state duels that goes with the second place finish.
