STEARNS —
A Lady Raider scoring drought through the second and third periods allowed Southwestern to pull away and capture an important district victory over McCreary, 67-36 on Friday night.
The win put the Lady Warriors out in front in the district race with them in control of their own destiny. McCreary could pull into a tie with Southwestern should they win the final four remaining district games which would include beating them on their home floor on January 25. That is assuming the Lady Warriors do not drop another game most likely against Wayne County who they already defeated in the first contest. McCreary still has district games at Wayne and home and away against Monticello in addition to the game at Southwestern.
The team with the top record in district play will open the district tournament with Monticello who is currently 2-14 while the remaining two teams will face other with the loser’s season coming to a close while the winner advances to the 12th Region Tournament which will be played at Pulaski County.
On Friday neither team started off well but Central was able to get out to a 6-4 lead on a Kaylee Cotton basket with 3:34 to play in the opening quarter but Southwestern would reel off six unanswered points to take a four point advantage before Candance Foster’s bucket with :38 left make in 10-8 which would be the score at quarters end.
Southwestern would slowly extend the lead in the second with a three point play from Elizabeth Latham to go along with long range bombs by Destiny Molden and Brittany Combs which made the score 19-13 after the Lady Raiders were held to just five points in the period.
Foster and Cotton each scored early in the third to cut the lead to 21-17 but from there Southwestern would go on a 13-0 run that would put them in control with a 34-17 with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. A Cierra Terry basket with 1:34 left finally ended the run but the Lady Warriors would score again before Cotton hit one of two foul shots with :40 on the clock.
The Lady Raiders had an opportunity to hold for the last shot of the period but a turnover with fourteen seconds left resulted in a made pair of charity tosses by Combs to give the Lady Warriors a 38-20 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth Southwestern would stretch the lead to as much as 48-23 with five minutes to go as the Lady Raiders went without a field goal for the first three minutes getting points only from three of four free throw shooting by Terry. A 6-0 run however by the Lady Raiders including three pointers by Foster and Kisha Gibson, McCreary’s only threes of the game, began a 13-9 run to end the game and cut the final margin down to 57-36.
Kaylee Cotton would be the only Lady Raider to reach double figures finishing with 13. Cierra Terry scored 8 and Candance Foster 7.
Destiny Molden scored ten fourth quarter points and led Southwestern with 13 while Adison Corder and Brittany Combs scored 10 each.
