Turnovers hamper Raiders in 42-6 loss in season opener

Nine turnovers prove very costly in loss

STEARNS — The McCreary Central football season kicked off Friday night along with the coaching debut of new Raider head coach Derek Smith. Coming into the season Smith was aware of the challenges that lay ahead after the graduation losses the Raiders suffered from last years team that won a school record seven games and earned a spot in the playoffs for the third consecutive season. What he could not have foreseen was a Raider team that could not hold on to the football, turning it over an incredible nine times to a Pineville team that was more than happy to accept the charity and certainly put it to good use in a 43-6 win over McCreary.

McCreary opened the contest by forcing a turnover of their own. Lineman Cody Musgrove got a hand up in front of a Pineville pass attempt and was able to pull the deflection out of the air to give McCreary the ball at the Lions 37 yard line but from that point the momentum swung in a big way in Pineville’s favor.

On the Raiders second snap the ball came loose during the exchange between quarterback Storm Stevens and running back Dustin Goins. Pineville recovered the

ball at their own 47 and began a 47 yard scoring drive that took seven plays.

McCreary’s offense showed some signs of life on the second possession as Goins ran for gains of 9 and 19 yards on the first two plays but a one yard loss, an incomplete pass and a delay of game penalty brought up a third and sixteen that resulted in Stevens being intercepted for McCreary’s second turnover in as many possessions.

Pineville took only four plays this time to go the 42 yards to the endzone and increase

their lead to 14-0. The Mountain Lions would score twice more in the first half to extend their lead to 29-0.

Central was able to get into the endzone just before the half despite turning the ball

over at the four yard line with only fourteen seconds remaining before the break. The

Raiders had marched the ball downfield on 14 plays and a half the distance penalty

against Pineville that put the Raiders at the 11 yard line. A run to the left side got Dustin Goins to the endzone on the ensuing first down but it was called back for a Raider holding penalty that moved the ball back to the 17. On third down Stevens

was picked off again near the goal line and it seemed that a Raider touchdown was not to be but the Mountain Lions gambled with a pass attempt on first down instead of taking a knee and running out the clock.

Goins was able to get back to the underthrown ball quicker than the intended receiver

and after making the catch returned it back to the four yard line before being brought down with only three seconds left in the half. Central made the best of the situation as

Stevens fired a pass to Goins in the endzonefor a touchdown that gave the Raiders some life heading into the locker room trailing 29-6.

As the second half began the Raiders moved the ball impressively as Goins gained

57 yards on the first four carries of the third quarter but that momentum was quickly

dashed with another fumble two plays later.

Pineville again cashed in on the Raiders miscues finishing off an 83 yard drive with a touchdown and a successful two point conversion to make the score 37-6 with 5:33 left in the third.

When they were able to hold on to the football the McCreary offense moved the ball

well enough to have made it a game. Going more to a power running attack in the second half featuring Goins who gained 98 of his 153 yards the Raiders were able to

advance as far as the Lion 17 on the opening drive and then picked up 33 yards on three plays before another fumble derailed their second possession.

Pineville scored their final touchdown of the night with less than a minute left in the third quarter after the second Raider turnover in as many possessions of the second half.

McCreary’s final possession of the game saw them start back at their own 20 after a five yard penalty and then move the ball as far as the Pineville 34 before the ninth and final turnover of the game inside the final minute ended the hopes of another score and effectively ended the game.

This Friday the Raiders travel west to Brownsville to face the 1-1 Edmonson County

Wildcats whom the Raiders defeated last season at home by a score of 30-18.
