New antennas, radios installed at 911 Center

WHITLEY CITY — Through the help of an $8,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, McCreary County’s 911 Dispatch Center has received some much-needed updates.

On Thursday, Whitley City Fire Chief Tony Miller brought a ladder truck to assist with the installation of 10 aerial antennas atop the 911 Center. McCreary County Deputy Judge-Executive Andrew Powell said that of the 14 antennas first installed in 1998, only nine were functioning.

The new antennas should improve reception for the center.

The grant also paid for four new radios corresponding with frequencies for McCreary County Search and Rescue, the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office south repeater, West McCreary Volunteer Fire Department and McCreary County EMS.

McCreary County Emergency Management/911 Director Rudy Young recently reported to fiscal court members that his department has worked on Homeland Security grants for back-up generators at the courthouse, EMS building and senior center.
