Browns are blessed with new home

PINE KNOT —  The 7th annual Extreme Build came to a close Saturday with the dedication of Charles “Butch” and Mary Ann Brown’s new home.

Extreme Build — a partnership between McCreary County Community Housing Development Corporation, Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation, Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, USDA, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and Kentucky Baptist Fellowship — was begun in 2006 as part of KBF’s Mountain Hope initiative which selects one local family each year who otherwise could not qualify to receive affordable mortgage rates.

Recipients are required to attend home ownership classes as well as correct any past credit issues. Funding for the $120,000 home is comprised of loans, grants, donated funds, donated labor and in-kind gifts.

The 10-day build replaced a 1971 mobile home where the couple lived for some 22 years. The new home is a three-bedroom, one-bath Riverside design.

While recipients are usually asked to assist in the build, Butch’s ill health prevented the couple from visiting the site until Saturday’s dedication cere-mony. Seeing their new home for the first time left them virtually speechless.

“I love you all,” Butch told the crowd of volunteers.

Representatives from several churches presented the Browns with the keys to their new home, a mailbox, decorative cross-stitch and bibles inscribed by the volunteers.

Steve Holm, the general contractor from Louisville who has supervised most of the Extreme Builds, spoke of how this project was blessed with good weather and smooth scheduling. “We could put up a sign right now saying ‘Mission Accomplished’ and it would be true,” he said.

Holm concluded with a reference to the Book of James: “We’re not saved by works. We’re saved for works.”

KBF’s Dr. John Lepper added that the home was built with a strong foundation, literally and metaphorically. “May the hospitality of this home touch all who visit here,” he said.
