STEARNS —
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell isn’t happy with the direction our country is taking and wants his constituents to do something about it.
Speaking to a crowd of more than 100 at McCreary Heritage Hall, Sen. McConnell opened with general comments about national spending before concentrating on the Affordable Health Act — the controversial 2,700-page bill more commonly known as Obamacare.
“Many things are constitutional that are still a mistake,” McConnell said, referring to the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the law. “Medicare and Medicaid weren’t in good shape to begin with, and we need to deal with what we already have.”
The senator went on to say that he hopes to get a title change with the upcoming election, that of Majority Leader.
“I would be setting the agenda…not Harry Reid,” McConnell said. “Repeal of Obamacare will be the first item on the agenda.”
Even if that does not occur, McConnell urged legislators in Frankfort to come together in a bipartisan effort to opt out of law’s Medicaid expansion which he said would add 400,000 to Kentucky’s rolls.
McConnell compared the issue to the likes of the Civil War, World War II and Civil Rights where Americans “got the right result” after a struggle.
“The election this fall is so important,” the senator said. “Never in my life have the parties been so divided but I don’t believe the majority of Americans want to turn our country into Greece.”
Sen. McConnell stayed after his remarks to greet those in attendance. While most appeared to be supporters, local attorney Darlene Price of U.S. Justice Watch was on hand in peaceful protest — hoping to question the senator about alleged violations at a Paducah uranium processing plant.
