WHITLEY CITY —
The past, present and future converged Tuesday as McCreary County closed out its year-long centennial celebration.
Festivities began at the local courthouse, where new additions were made to the portrait gallery and time capsule.
Family members hung a portrait in the fiscal courtroom of former Judge-Executive Joe Perry, who was Sheriff when he was appointed to the judgeship in May 1977.
The portrait was painted by local artist Dorothy Washam.
Centennial Commission member Shane Gilreath noted that Perry helped unify the county in the face of a miners’ strike which had garnered national attention.
Immediately following the ceremony, the celebration moved downstairs to the courthouse lobby where Deputy Judge-Executive Andrew Powell discussed the contents being added to the original time capsule which had been sealed in 2000.
With the original capsule and contents intact, the new documents and items (gathered with assistance from the McCreary County Public Library as well as the McCreary County Historical and Genealogical Society) were added with Greg Burdine and Daniel Ridener designing a capstone to over where the capsule will be placed with the courthouse wall.
Members of the McCreary County Historical Society then unveiled a permanent memorial at Pine Knot Intermediate School honoring the efforts of Governor James B. McCreary, legislator William B. Creekmore, merchant Martin B. Campbell and Whitley County Attorney John C. Bird to form McCreary County out of parcels from Wayne, Whitley and Pulaski counties.
Also attending was Somerset graphic designer Kirby Stephens, who created the kiosk.
PKI students assisted in the ceremony with a color guard presentation and a rousing rendition of the national anthem.
Historian Sam Perry told the students the men memorialized were able to look to the future to create McCreary County and he hoped that the students will be reminded of their own futures when they see the memorial.
“McCreary County is pretty good,” he said. “It’s up to you, your children and grandchildren to make it even better.”
