WHITLEY CITY —
Three men who have been recently alluding authorities are back in jail.
On Sunday night, McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Joe Horne and Constable Donald Daugherty arrested Charles Aaron Stephens, 23, of Pine Knot.
Deputy Horne told the Record that Stephens had walked away from a halfway house in Louisville about three weeks before. Officers received a tip that Stephens was staying at either his father’s or aunt’s house. Dep. Horne and Constable Daugherty found Stephens at his father’s Airport Road home, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Stephens has been lodged in the McCreary County Detention Center under a probation violation as well as two bench warrants for nonpayment of fines totalling more than $1,000.
Stephens’ prior convictions include drug trafficking and receiving stolen property.
Last week also saw the recapture of two men who escaped from the McCreary County Detention Center April 10.
Joey E. Spradlin, 32, of Revelo, and Gregory Allen Gholson, 26, of Whitley City were each indicted last Monday on charges of second-degree escape and first-degree Persistent Felony Offender before being caught later that night.
The pair broke out of the jail’s recreational area —known as the “bullpen” among local law enforcement — on the evening of April 10 and continued to elude authorities for nearly two weeks before an anonymous tip led them to a Rattlesnake Ridge residence.
The escapees were taken into custody just before 11 p.m. on Fordie Coffey Road. In addition to Dep. Horne and Constable Daugherty, Deputy Jerry Meadows and Kentucky State Police troopers Shaler Jones and Wendell Higginbotham assisted in the arrests.
