PINE KNOT —
The civic community lost one of its brightest stars with last week’s passing of Kathy Brannon.
Brannon, 57, died Thursday at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset following a long battle with cancer.
Originally from Mason County, Brannon made her home in Pine Knot. Last December she retired from the McCreary County Extension Office where she had been the Family and Consumer Science Agent since April 1976.
In her 33 years of service, Brannon had joint responsibility for the 4-H Program and worked with numerous homemaker groups, special interest groups, and low income families to improve nutrition, health and family living. In particular she enjoyed working with the McCreary County Basket Guild, Lake Cumberland Heritage Skills, 4-H Camp, 4-H Project Week, Sew Much Comfort (retrofitting clothing for wounded veterans), and the Master Clothing Volunteers.
Brannon was also active in community events and organizations including McCreary Fest, the McCreary County Fair Board, the McCreary County Health Fair, the McCreary County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership McCreary County, the McCreary County Development Association, the Cancer Coalition, the Thursday Lunch Bunch, the Spay and Neuter Clinic and the Women’s Health Group.
Brannon is survived by two adult sons as well as many relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held on Sunday afternoon in the Pine Knot Funeral Home chapel with Fr. Mike Ramler officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, the American Cancer Society or the McCreary County Christian Care Center.
