OSBORNE CREEK —
McCreary County officers are piecing together the events leading up to a bizarre shooting incident Friday east of Pine Knot.
Norman D. Waters, 71, of Pine Knot has been lodged in the McCreary County Detention Center on charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree assault (three counts), fourth-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.
The twist is that Waters himself was shot in the incident.
Waters called 911 at approximately 3 a.m. Friday morning advising that he had been shot and was in need of medical assistance.
The call prompted a dispatch for law enforcement.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Craig Reed made contact with Waters at the Speedco convenience store near the KY 92/US 27 intersection.
Waters told Trp. Reed that he had driven himself there after he had been shot by his former stepdaughter, 35-year-old Crystal Redden, at her home on Osborne Creek Road in Strunk.
Upon further investigation, the trooper determined that it was Waters who had acted unlawfully.
Due to a dispute over missing property, Waters had gone to Redden’s home to confront her boyfriend — 44-year-old Brian Spradlin of Revelo. As Waters began to assault Spradlin, Redden was struck while attempting to break up the fight.
Waters then went outside to his vehicle to retrieve a handgun. He assaulted to unnamed females who also tried to intervene as he re-entered the home. Waters found Redden and Spradlin in another room but by this time, Redden had also armed herself with a handgun. She fired one shot, striking Waters in the torso.
Waters was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington but had been released by Sunday, when Trp. Reed and McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Joe Horne arrested him at his home.
Waters was booked into the McCreary County Detention Center just before 5 p.m. on Sunday evening. Trp. Reed is leading the continuing investigation, telling the Record that the case additional charges may be forthcoming pending review by Commonwealth Attorney Allen Trimble and presentation to the local grand jury.
