WINFIELD —
A Winfield man is facing a second-degree murder charge after the man he allegedly shot Tuesday died from his injuries Wednesday morning.
L. B. Morris, Jr., 44, of Winfield was initially charged with aggravated assault in the shooting of his daughter’s fiancé Tuesday afternoon. Christopher Ray Trammell, 21, originally from McCreary County, reportedly died Wednesday morning, after being shot in the head late Tuesday afternoon at the Morris home.
WBNT reports that the arrest warrant filed by the Scott County Sheriff’s Department indicates the shooting arose from an argument. According to the warrant, Trammell allegedly came home from work Tuesday afternoon and confronted Mr. Morris and his daughter, Jacquelyn Morris, about getting his truck dirty. Jacquelyn Morris and Trammell were reportedly arguing inside a bedroom at the Morris home at 378 Foster Lane in Winfield, when L.B. Morris intervened. The elder Morris claimed he asked Trammell to leave. As the pair continued to argue, Jacquelyn reportedly left the room. At some point in the confrontation, Morris claims Trammell pulled out a pocket knife and threatened him. L.B. Morris reportedly responded to the threat by pulling out a .22 caliber pistol he was carrying on his side and allegedly shot Trammell in the head.
Jacquelyn Morris claimed she returned to the bedroom after hearing the gunshot and found Trammell lying on the floor and her father holding his (Trammell’s) head.
The Sheriff’s Department reportedly recovered a small pocket knife from the bedroom but the potential weapon was reportedly found lying on the bed with all its blades closed.
Following Trammell’s death, the charge against L.B. Morris has been upgraded from aggravated assault to second-degree murder.
Funeral services were held in Whitley City yesterday with burial following in the Silerville Cemetery.
