STEARNS —
Just over 200 seniors took part in Saturday’s graduation ceremony at McCreary Central High School.
Both Chelsea Vaughn in her invocation and Class President Jessica Neal paid tribute to classmate Johnathan Elliot, who was killed in a tragic fire in February. The McCreary Central Band performed his favorite song, “Stand By Me.”
Valedictorian Jessica Hatfield reminded her fellow graduates that while commencement is a milestone, it should be looked at as only a beginning.
Salutatorian Dylan Jones delivered part of his speech in Spanish for instructor Kathlene Favela.
Before the class received their diplomas, those graduating with honors were recognized:

MCHS Principal Sharon Privett spoke of how the school has achieved all of its No Child Left Behind for the first time since the legislation was enacted. She also noted that the Class of 2012 earned scholarships amounting to more than $453,000.
“But the most important fact about this school is that we have the most caring student body,” Ross told the crowd. “My wish for you is that you leave the doors of McCreary Central as you arrived — ready for anything and with your arms and eyes wide open.”
Superintendent Arthur “Donnie” Wright, who presented each senior with his or her diploma, credited the parents and teachers with much of the class’ accomplishment. He urged the graduates to continue their education.
“With this accomplishment, you have proven to yourself that you can persevere,” he said. “Go out and make McCreary County proud of you.”
Following the presentation of diplomas, Storm Stevens delivered the benediction.
School resource officers assisted with traffic control before and following the commencement ceremony. The school district provided shuttles for spectators to Pine Knot, Stearns and Whitley City.
