Denney passes

McCreary native made his name with KACo

LOUISVILLE —  A McCreary native passed away last week following a long illness.

Larry Wayne Denney, 64, died Thursday in Louisville, where he made his home.

The son of Loma Denney and the late Willard “Wig” Denney, Larry Denney may be best remembered locally as a member of the 1964 McCreary County High School basketball team which competed at the state championships.

Those who follow county government also know him as the agent who for several years handled the county’s insurance policies through KACo (Kentucky Association of Counties).

In 2006, Denney opened his own business KY County Insurance Services. Earlier in his career, he had also sold insurance for Crabtree-Wilson Insurance Agency.

An avid golfer, Denney briefly served as the pro manager of the McCreary County Golf Club. He was a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, Denney is survived by his wife Cynthia, three daughters, six grandchildren as well as many relatives and friends.

A memorial was held for Denney on Sunday in Louisville. Gifts of remembrance may be made to Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned degrees in English and Philosophy. Complete obituary information can be found in this week’s edition on Page 6A.
