JONES HOLLOW —
A former McCreary County man lost his life Thursday evening when he lost control of his truck on West KY 92.
Parker “Pete” Gilreath, 75, of Monticello was driving eastbound on the highway when the tires of his 2000 Chevrolet Silverado slipped off the pavement in a curve. According to McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Jerry Meadows, it appears that Gilreath overcorrected — crossing the westbound lane and flipping in the grass just before the entrance to Jones Hollow.
The accident occurred at just before 7:30 p.m. Brad Coffey, who lives near the scene, heard the crash and went outside to investigate.
“My first thought was to get the weight [of the truck] off him,” Coffey told the Record.
Coffey used his tractor to life the truck but as emergency personnel arrived, it became clear that Gilreath had not survived the crash.
Gilreath’s body was loaded onto an ambulance to await the arrival of McCreary County Coroner Dan Ridener. Constable Donald Daugherty, McCreary County EMS, West McCreary and Whitley City volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.
Funeral services for Gilreath were held yesterday with burial in the Methodist Cemetery.
Gilreath was a member of the Whitley City United Methodist Church as well as the Orie S. Ware Masonic Lodge #874, the Louisville Scottish Rite 32nd degree, as well as the York Rite. He is survived by two sons, a sister, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Gilreath’s complete obituary can be found in next week’s edition.
