WHITLEY CITY —
U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05) joined PRIDE, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local officials Thursday to celebrate the completion of McCreary County Water District’s $1.2 million sewer expansion project along Williamsburg Street.
The project brings sanitary sewer to approximately 145 households and eliminated an estimated 50 failing septic systems and 30 straight pipes.
The project was funded primarily by the Corps of Engineers as part of the PRIDE 531 initiative. The water district contributed $300,000 toward the 75/25 match.
“This project provides about 145 families for the first time ever with a reliable source for clean drinking water and sanitary sewer service,” said Congressman Rogers, who co-founded PRIDE. “In the last 15 years, almost $5 million has been invested in McCreary County alone thanks to PRIDE.”
In addition to PRIDE’s 15th anniversary, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the McCreary County Water District. In that time, water lines have been extended to serve approximately 95 percent of county residents. Under the leadership of Superintendent Steve Owens, the expansion of sewer service has also become priority.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at McCreary County Park in Whitley City. Congressman Rogers was joined by McCreary County Judge-Executive Doug Stephens, PRIDE’s Tammie Wilson, and Colonel Robert D. Peterson, District Commander of the Corps of Engineers’ Huntington District.
Col. Peterson noted that while McCreary County projects are usually handled by the Corps’ Nashville District, he was pleased that his district could be involved in the Williamsburg Street project.
“This is truly a beautiful area,” Col. Peterson said.
Prior to the ribbon-cutting, Judge Stephens joined the congressman in paying special tribute to Gib Troxell, a World War II veteran who had fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Troxell was in attendance with his wife Lois.
“If not for what you did, we wouldn’t be standing here today,” Judge Stephens said.
